"As soon as I made my first piece, I knew this was what I wanted to do" - This is the moment Sara Bukumunhe decided that she would turn her passion into a career. At age 29 she launched SaraBuk Jewellery. We spoke to her about her life, work and her business.
I was born in Uganda and my family moved to Yorkshire when I was 9 and we have lived here ever since. I didn't start making jewellery until I was 29, at first as a hobby but I soon started selling what I made to family and friends and it went from there. I am married with 2 teenage children and I play also saxophone in a band with my husband Andy.
What inspired you to launch SaraBuk Jewellery?
As soon as I made my first piece of jewellery I knew this was what I wanted to do. When I finished my job to have my second child, I started working on making it my future. I was very lucky that I had the opportunity to do what I love as a living. One of the first pieces I made were mine and my husband's wedding rings.
Do you have a favourite designer or brand jewellery?
I don't tend to follow designer brands as I prefer small individual labels and handmade items, and try to support small or local businesses where possible.
Tell us about your product range and what market you cater for...
At the moment I have 3 main ranges, Buttercup, Leaf and Sewn Up. The Buttercup range is feminine, petite and floral, Leaf is a bit more edgy and Sewn Up is my newest range and more fun and contemporary. However I also work to commission and I make one off pieces of jewellery.
What are key materials do you work with and where do you source them?
I work mainly in silver and of gold, and my Sewn Up range has the added element of embroidery threads which I actually sew into the silver.
Do you have a favourite season to design for, if any?
I don't design for particular seasons as I hope that my jewellery can be worn all year round.
I think my jewellery is quite classic and timeless so its suitable for many seasons and occasions!
Tell us your favourite pieces from your range...
My favourite from the Buttercup range is the Buttercup stud because its so pretty and easy to wear, it can be worn day or night and goes with anything. I also love the chain bracelet from the Leaf range, I wear mine all the time layered with other narrow bangles. And from the Sewn Up range I love the Large assorted 6 Disc necklace, because its makes a statement. I love that I can customise the colour to go with different outfits.
What's next for SaraBuk Jewellery?
I am currently in the process of researching and designing a more precious range, so expect to see some warm yellow 18ct gold with natural brown and grey diamonds.
Where can our reader find your pieces?
I sell online through etsy, through my own website, and I also sell through 20 outlets across the country, details of which can be found on my website.
