Corrine Hayford-Kwatchey, founder of Kora Naturals talks to us about her handmade, natural skin and hair care company with Shea butter at its heart.
What inspired you to launch Kora Naturals?
I have always preferred to be natural. Growing up I had natural hair until age of 16 when I succumbed to peer pressure and relaxed my hair. This caused a lot of damage; burns, hair loss so I decided to go back to being natural which I have been since 2005.
My reasons for starting this business were simply because I have used Shea butter for a long time, when I had my first daughter I wanted to ensure she had the best start so I began using Shea butter and olive oil on her from day one. I had already been making my own hair pomade, I then started looking up what else I could produce at home from Shea butter and started experimenting with lip balms and body butters. As I started to be more concerned about using natural products and the need to make a bit of extra money I realised I could turn my new hobby into a business and Kora Naturals was born!
Tell us about the products from your range...
The products in the Kora Naturals range currently comprise of unrefined Shea butter (which I whip by hand so it is nice and soft for the customer), Virgin Coconut oil, Whipped Coconut & Shea body butter, Peppermint lip balm, Shea hair oil, Conditioning Shea shampoo, Dry hair & scalp balm and Shea Hair body butter.
I source my Shea butter and Virgin coconut oil from Ghana, other ingredients come from suppliers in the UK which have proven commitments to ethically produced products. If I had to choose, my 3 “hero products” would be whipped Coconut & Shea body butter, Shea hair oil and the Dry hair & scalp balm.
Tell us about Kora Natural at home parties...
The @home Parties are a chance for customers to sample products, some already know some benefits about natural products, others have never tried so it’s an opportunity to explain the benefits of natural products. There’s also the opportunity to buy exclusive products that are not available on the website e.g. my Green tea and Shea sugar scrub.
What's next for Kora Naturals?
I hope to have an established core facial product range over the coming months and also a range for men at some point in the near future.
